Few weeks back I came across a post about stem cell donation. It sounded interesting, so I visited the official page of DKMS-BMST to learn more about it. I was overwhelmed to read about the stories of the donor and the survivors. I immediately got the urge to join hands with DKMS team to save people who is longing for a second chance to live. 

What is DKMS-BMST? 

DKMS-BMST is a non-profit organization, which is on a mission to fight blood cancer and related disorders like thalassemia and aplastic anemia. They are raising awareness about blood stem cell transplantation and encouraging people to register as potential donors. 

How does it work?

Every 27 seconds, someone somewhere in the world is diagnosed with blood cancer. To fight against it, they need a special kind of treatment called a blood stem cell transplant. They need to find their match at the earliest,who has the same HLA type. Once a match is found, stem cells are harvested from the donor and infused into the patient's bloodstream, where they multiply and generate healthy blood cells, effectively breaking the cycle of blood cancer. That's where the DKMS-BMST organisation comes into play, they help the patients find their potential match. DKMS-BMST maintaining a database about the donors and their HLA type,which will be available for patients all over the world who are searching for a donor.

How to register as a donor?

• Visit DKMS-BMST Registration page
• Fill out the necessary details
• After successful registration, a swab kit will be delivered to your address.
• It consists of a consent form with donor copy, swabs, swab envelope, business reply envelope and instruction sheet.
• Swab inside of your cheeks with the kit and place the swab inside the swab envelope.
• Sign the consent form and donor copy.
• Finally, you should insert the consent form and swab envelope inside the business reply envelope and send it back to DKMS-BMST. (You can either post it on your own or arrange for a free pickup)
